The Organ Pipe Cactus
The organ pipe cactus was named such because its arms reach up similar to an organ pipe's tube-like shape. Known as Stenocereus Thurberi (its Latin name), the organ pipe cactus thrives with great amounts of heat and sunlight, and it generally grows on slopes and areas with unobstructed southern exposure. The desert cactus grows naturally in many desert territories in Mexico and a remote region of southern Arizona. The Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, located in western Pima County near Ajo, Arizona, maintains and preserves an area lush with organ pipe cacti, saguaros, palo verdes and other desert plants.
